Right Crop, Right Ground: A KALRO-Based Map of What Grows Best Where in Kenya
From the coconut palms of the coast to the pyrethrum fields of the upper highlands — a region-by-region guide to the crops, cereals, and varieties Kenya's national agricultural research organization recommends for each zone.
Introduction
Kenya's agriculture is often discussed county by county, but the more scientifically useful lens is the agro-ecological zone (AEZ) — a classification built on altitude, temperature, and moisture availability rather than administrative boundaries.1 The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) uses this framework as the backbone of its variety-release and Technologies, Innovations and Management Practices (TIMPs) programme: crop varieties are developed, tested, and released for specific zones, not for the country as a whole, and KALRO publishes suitability maps and county-level dissemination lists for its major value chains — maize, sorghum, beans, cassava, tomato, and others — precisely so that a farmer or investor can match crop to ground before committing capital.2 This article summarises that zone-by-zone picture for Kenya's staple cereals, pulses, roots, and vegetables, drawing on KALRO's published TIMPs inventories and value-chain manuals.
Part 1: Kenya's Agro-Ecological Zone System
Kenya's dry land mass is divided into seven major agro-ecological zones, defined originally by Sombroek, Braun and van der Pouw (1980/1982) and refined by Jaetzold and Schmidt, based on temperature belts and moisture availability ratios.1 The zone groups correspond to altitude-driven temperature bands, and each has a historically associated "signature" crop that defines the zone's ceiling of agricultural potential: cashew and coconut for the lowlands, sugarcane and cotton for the lower midlands, Arabica coffee for the upper midlands, tea for the lower highlands, and pyrethrum for the upper highlands, with high-altitude rough grazing land above that.1 KALRO's variety-development programmes are structured around a compressed, practical version of this system — typically Coastal Lowlands, Medium Altitude–Dry, Medium Altitude–Moist, Medium Altitude–Transitional, and Highlands — and each released variety is explicitly tagged to the zone(s) it was bred and validated for.2
Part 2: Zone-by-Zone Crop Recommendations
Coastal Lowlands (Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, Tana River, Mombasa hinterland)
This hot, low-altitude belt is where KALRO's coastal maize breeding programme is concentrated, precisely because standard highland maize varieties fail here under heat stress. KALRO has released and actively promotes a series of maize varieties specifically for the coastal lowlands, including Coast Composite Maize (CCM) — an open-pollinated, heat-tolerant, leaf-rust-resistant variety with a yield potential of 16–21 bags per acre — alongside hybrids such as Pwani Hybrid 1 (PH1), Pwani Hybrid 4 (PH4), and the drought-tolerant Shukran-16, all bred and validated for Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and Tana River conditions.2 Cassava is also a strong regional fit, thriving along the Coast alongside Western Kenya, Nyanza, and parts of Eastern Kenya, where drought tolerance and good root development matter more than rainfall volume.3
Lower and Medium Altitude Dry Zones (Eastern Kenya's semi-arid belt: Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Tharaka-Nithi)
Where maize struggles, sorghum and drought-tolerant maize composites take over. KALRO identifies its semi-arid, drought-tolerant maize varieties — such as the historic Katumani Composite B (KCB) and the newer Ukamez series (KDH414-11/Ukamez 6, KDH414-12/Ukamez 7) — as the appropriate choice for the Medium Altitude–Dry zone.2 Sorghum is highlighted as thriving specifically where maize fails, with high suitability mapped across semi-arid and arid Eastern Kenya (Kitui, Makueni, Tharaka-Nithi), the coastal lowlands, and parts of western lowlands.3 Cassava again performs well in warm conditions with soils favourable for tuber development across this broader lower-altitude band.3
Medium Altitude – Moist and Transitional Zones (parts of Central, Eastern, and Rift Valley)
This intermediate band — neither semi-arid nor true highland — is where KALRO's Medium Altitude–Moist and Medium Altitude–Transitional maize hybrid series are recommended, including varieties such as WE2101, WE2104, EMB225, EMB226, and the KH500 series, bred for moderate rainfall and moderate altitude conditions rather than either extreme.2 Tomato is prominent here too: KALRO's own variety guidance notes that many of its recommended tomato hybrids — including Rio Grande, Cal J, and Onyx F1 — perform best specifically in medium to lower-medium agro-ecological zones.4
Highlands (Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru highlands, Central Kenya highlands, Rift Valley highlands, Western highlands)
Kenya's high-rainfall, cool highland belt is the country's cereal breadbasket and the zone KALRO's Highlands maize series targets directly, with varieties such as the High Altitude Composite (HAC) and the KH600 series bred for these conditions.2 This zone also supports the country's major bean production: suitable bean-growing zones are identified as Central Kenya, the Rift Valley highlands, and the Western highlands — areas sharing cooler temperatures and moderate, reliable rainfall.3 Wheat follows a similar highland pattern, concentrated on the plains of Narok, the highlands of Nakuru, the fertile stretches of Uasin Gishu, and the slopes around Timau on Mount Kenya.5
Upper Highlands / Cold Highlands (Nyandarua, Meru highlands, Mt Elgon, Nakuru highlands, Bomet, Kericho)
At the cool, high-altitude ceiling of Kenya's arable land, potato becomes the dominant commercial crop: the cold highlands of Nyandarua, Meru, Mt Elgon, the Nakuru highlands, Bomet, and Kericho are identified as high-suitability zones and are the areas best known for commercial potato farming in Kenya.3 This same belt is historically associated with tea in its lower reaches and pyrethrum at its uppermost, cooler margins, following Kenya's classic temperature-belt zonation.1
Special case: multi-zone counties
Some counties straddle several zones within their own borders because of dramatic internal altitude variation, and KALRO's guidance is explicit that this internal diversity should shape farm-level, not just county-level, crop choice. Meru County is a clear example: its rich volcanic soil and microclimates spanning cool highlands to warmer lowlands support potatoes, bananas, and high-grade tea in different parts of the same county, alongside a significant dairy sector — meaning the correct crop recommendation depends on which micro-zone within Meru a given farm actually sits in, not on the county name alone.6

Conclusion
The clearest lesson from KALRO's zone-based variety programme is that "what grows well in Kenya" is the wrong question — the right one is "what grows well where I am." A maize hybrid bred and validated for the Highlands will systematically underperform in the Coastal Lowlands, and a variety selected for the semi-arid Medium Altitude–Dry zone carries traits — early maturity, drought tolerance — that are simply unnecessary, and sometimes yield-limiting, in the Medium Altitude–Moist zone. For any investor or grower planning a new planting programme in Kenya, the first reference point should be KALRO's zone and county-specific variety lists for the target crop, cross-checked against the farm's actual altitude and rainfall pattern — not the crop's general reputation nationally.
